Susie’s Fab Five | Songs on the Plight of Man

1.Ekaanthathayude  from Bhargavi Nilayam (1964)

Kamukara’s voice has always had this special ability to convey the despondency-philosophy combination really well, as it does in this song from the movie Bhargavee Nilayam (1964). That other worldly feeling is conveyed well through P Bhaskaran‘s lyrics and MS Baburaj‘s music. It makes me feel that I am marooned on an isolated island every time I hear it.

2.Hridayatthinoru Vaathil from Poonthenaruvi (1974)

The disillusionment and disappointment with love, and life in general, and the pain of memories is described in this song from the movie Poonthenaruvi, written by Sreekumaran Thampi and set beautifully to music by MK Arjunan, and complemented by the honey-gold voice of  KJ Yesudas.

There’s only one door to the heart,
The door of Memory,
Sad when it is opened,
Sad when it is closed

3.Maanava Hridayam  from Ananthashayanam (1972)

This captivating song is the result of a very rare Sreekumaran Thampi- K Raghavan – P Jayachandran combination from the movie Ananthashayanam.

The human mind is a madhouse,
A dancehouse of incurable sickness,
Each emotion is a madman,
Who dies at the end of his frenzied wanderings.

4.Ekaantha Padhikan Njaan from Ummachu (1971)

Another ballad of loneliness, this time K Raghavan‘s music and P Jayachandran’s voice complements P Bhaskaran‘s lyrics which describes the aimless wanderer yearning for repose, always searching for the elusive mythical beast of human happiness. This song is from the movie Ummachu.

5.Veenedam Vishnulokam from Vivaha Sammaanam (1971)

When I heard this song for the first time I was fascinated by the satirical treatment of heartbreak and disillusionment. The song is from the movie Vivaahasammaanam, A little known Vayalar-Devarajan creation brought to life by the voice of KJ Yesudas.

ഹ..ഹ.. (വീണെടം)

I hope I haven’t depressed everyone with my selection of sad songs.

Please share your thoughts.

  1. Tasteful selection as always Susie!
Of course Malayalam is rich in ‘blue’ songs if one may call it that and you can easily think of another ten or twenty within the next 5 minutes.
An ‘ekaanthatha’ song which I remembered now is ‘ekaathathe ninte dweepil…’ from Novembarite nashtam.
Susie have you heard ‘ee jeevithamenikkenthinu thannu…’ form ‘Panchamrutham’?
My god you have listen to it and hear how pathos drips from KJY’s voice and rendition.

  2. എവിടെ നിന്നോ in കളഞ്ഞു കിട്ടിയ… is notable. The last stanza, however, sounds odd.

    1. Just imagine singing it at a send-off function in college/ school/ the like. You’d struggle to ward off emotions.

  3. പാട്ടുകളുടെ തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പ് നന്നായിരിക്കുന്നു, ഹൃദയത്തിനൊരു വാതിൽ പ്രത്യേകിച്ചും,,

  4. Susie, Ekaanta padhikan njan is one of my favourite songs; in fact, my go-to song when I feel low. Thanks for the others. Hridayathinoru vaathil was new to me.

    1. Thanks, Anu. Isn’t it great that we all have our Malayalam film music to turn to when we feel down? I do that too. I don’t have one particular song as my pick-me-up, it depends on my mood🙂 Sometimes I listen to a long list of them at a time.

Very good selection.. especially the song veenedam vishnulokam. I believe that the records for this films are so far not released (Has to check it). There is another song in the same film… Mohabhangangal sung by Yesudas. I feel that the following songs can also be included.
Swantham Hrudayathinullarayil Ente Swapnathe adakkiya Kallarayil – Vila Kuranja Manushyar -K J Yesudas – P Bhaskaran, T K Pukazhenthy
Akalukayo Tammil Akalukayo – Kaavalam Chundan – K J Yesudas – Vayalar Devarajan
    Aakaasathinte Chuvattil – Miss Mary – K J Yesudas – Sreekumaran Thampi R K Sekhar
    Tapaswini Tapaswini Prema Tapaswini – Vidhyarthi – K J Yesudas – Vayalar M S Baburaj

    Sajith

    1. Sajith,
I had’nt heard the song “Mohabhabgangal” , or “Aakaashathinte Chuvattil” before! Thank you.

Swanthantham Hridayathin Ullarayil is definitely a favourite of mine, along with Dukhangalkkinnu njan avadhi koduthu, Sooryanennoru Nakshathram, etc.
