One of the most glorious decades of Malayalam Cinema. Black & White blossomed into pure art in the hands of one of the best cinematographers of India, A Vincent, who turned Director with Bhargavee Nilayam (1964). RK Shekhar came to his own, with his first independent music composed for Pazhassi Raja (1964), with the brilliant Kottarakkara Sreedharan Nair essaying the lead character, Pazhassi Raja ! (Yes, Mammootty wasn’t the first, you see) . Nithya kanyaka (1963) became the 100th film production in Malayalam and Alummoodan debuted in Ezhu Rathrikal (1968). This decade also gave Malayalam Cinema another phenomenal Director, PN Menon, as he debuted with Rosy(1965), with PJ Antony as the lead, and Prem Nazir in a supporting role! Bhagyajathakam (1962) gave us one of the finest female leads of Malayalam Cinema, the evergreen Sheela. Adoor Bhasi sang for the movies for the first time in Aadyakirangal (1964), directed by P Bhaskaran based on Parappurath‘s novel. Truly, I would say, along with the sheer range in the themes, subjects and debuts, the golden age of Malayalam Cinema shined bright in this decade.

pls help
(pls give a usefull link)
hello,
Wonderful collection,
I’m trying to locate the name of an old malayalam movie (possibly 60s or 70s) with the following theme, please suggest movie name if anyone can identify:
A few things I can remember (may not be be exactly as described, but pretty close) about the theme:
– hero sings one song when they were in love
– however, heroine is forced to marry another man
– heroine is now a devoted wife, and sings same song for her husband
– later husband happens to the hero (old lover) sing same song, he is now suspicious of his wife and confronts her about how she knows the same song. wife discloses old love, but makes clear that she is faithful and has had no further relation with old lover after marriage
– husband still thinks she harbors affections for old lover, so he works on re-uniting old lover and wife, divorces wife so she can remarry
– husband contacts old lover, and arranges marriage of (now divorced) wife with old lover
– however, wife is now heart broken as she is devoted to husband since marriage, and dont want to break the relationship and go back to the old lover
– nobody listens to her feelings, so on the day of 2nd wedding (with old lover), heroine commits suicide (possibly scene at top of Athirapply waterfalls)
– the main setting (I believe) is a muslim family setting
– cannot remember any actors or actresses
– faintly recall this to be a black and white (or early color) movie
thanks for any suggestions.

Asuravithu (MT Novel) was released in 60s right? I am looking for a copy since long..
Yes Sandeep, Asuravithu released in 1968.There are a couple of additions/iterations on the list long-pending which I hope to get around soon. Thanks for the reminder. A legal copy, to the best of my knowledge, is yet to be released in the market. Thanks, cinematters
I happened on this blog while searching for copies of an old malayalam movie- Thilottama released in 1966, directed by kunchacko. One of my grand uncles, during the course of a colourful life, had played an extra in the movie, a couple of scenes actually, and recently expressed a desire to watch the movie. Finding this blog was a pleasant surprise, the fact that such dedication to preserve the memories of these old movies exist is in itself a testament to the character of the bloggers here. My heartfelt appreciation to each and all. Anyways..any idea where i can find Thilottoma???? Thanks either way….
Dear Praveen
Asianet may be having a copy of the film since i know that the songs of the movie poovittu poovittu, Priye Pranayini Priye was telecasted in the channel. Towards the late nineties, Asianet introduced a new channel – Asianet Global. Lot many films of the 60s and 70s for the first time was telecasted in this channel. I think the film was telecasted during this period

Hi Rajasree,
To the best of my knowledge, that was Master Mahesh. Will re-confirm and get back to you. Thanks, CM.
Just reconfirmed it with the man himself. No, it wasn’t him. 🙂 thanks, cm.
Indeed it was the decade that saw the peak of malayalam movies, thereafter the growth declined, the down fall starting in mid 1970s and more evident in the first decade of 20th centurey, surely we are yet to break the record established in this decade, with Cheemeen released in 1966 and winning the Honourable President of India’s gold medal. We are yet to have another Ramu Kariat, P.N.Menon and A.Vincent.
I have no hope in the so-called New Generation stuff, which is counter creative, offshoot of postmodern thoughts and concepts of life
does anyone one have the film AANA by sethumadhavan….
Hi Vysakh,
I am not aware of any movie titled Aana by KS Sethumadhavan, however there one titled Anna ( the Malayalam version of the name Hannah ) released in 1964, starring Sathyan and Ragini? Was this what you were looking for? ..cinematters
i have one film called AANA in my collection starring MADHU, SOMAN, SRIVIDHYA, but that was directed by p chandrakumar not sethu madhavan.. sethumadhavan film was ANNA.. by lotus pictures in 1964.. that film is not commercially available..
from where do i get old movie schoolmaster
Hi Raju (?),
How many times would you keep posting the same request here at the blog under different posts with gibberish given as your sender e-mail id and hoping someone would reply to you? I mean, do you really think the blogging platform has the super intelligence to deliver a reply to you, over-riding the gibberish that you have posted as your e-mail id? I donot use e-mail ids to SPAM anyone, nor do I use it for any commercial purposes – this is a bonafide, personal blog with an enthusiastic small band of contributors supporting it with streams of information. I find it very funny that you would want valid information, but you wouldnt want anyone to CONTACT you with that information. For the SECOND TIME, the songs from School Master are present on Youtube. Why not check the uploader for more details?
raju…. you cant get SCHOOL MASTER right now… commercially not available… youtube uploaded songs of school master came from the prog ORMAYIL ORU CHITHRAM and ORMAYIL BAHADUR prog. last time this film was telecasted in DD MALAYALAM channel and that was in 2005. no more movies of MERRYLAND production are likely to hit market in near future…. you have only one option left… and ie wait for DD to re telecast it as they have again acquired the right of telecasting MERRYLAND movies… or try for a video cassette of the same… i repeat VIDEO CASSETTE.. not DVDs or VCDs……
Song scenes of SCHOOL MASTER are available in YOUU TUBE.

Hi, Any body can suggest me to find the site for old movie “Yateem”? thx
Hi Yoosuf,
The Video ( Neela meghamaalikayil) attached has a ticker that runs the address of a Royal Video Vision, No 46 EMS Shopping Complex, Kadavanthra, Kochi with Contact Nos 0484-3957891 and a Cellphone number 9847989203. Why not give them a call and check? Thanks, cinematters.
Excellent work ! Feels nostalgic when going thro’ the list itself. Can you suggest any place the where movies of 1950-70 period are available for viewing ?
Thank you Doctor 🙂 Glad to have helped you sit back and smile wistfully. A good number of the movies are available as Single Uploads on Youtube itself now, and hope more will follow. There have been organised attempts like Lehren Malayalam in bringing many old titles legally on Youtube. Reliance has started off with its BigFlix Pay-per-view Channel which has around 190 titles when I last checked, which is a mix of the old and the new.Happy viewing. Thanks again.cinematters

Can anybody help?
Thanks & regards
i have both.. contact me thru CM if you want
An excellent compilation, CM!
I used to see many of the old movies on VHS cassettes from people returning from the Gulf during the 80s/90s: Odayilninnu, Neelakuyil (not my favourite, sorry!), Kuttiyedathy, Vilakku vangiya veena, kuttikuppayam, Anubhavangal Palicchakal… Of late many of these oldies are appearing again, on VCD, and some of the prints are, as you right described it, “crappy”. Once case in point being that 80s classic, Yavanika. But worthwhile, nevertheless.
I have with me a documentary called “Cinemayude Kaalpaadukal” containing interviews with many prominent Malayalam film-pernonalities from the 60s/70s: Vincent (love his Bhargavi Nilayam), singer Jayachandran, and music director Raghavan (kaayalarigathil valayerinjappol) to name a few. A few ‘behind the scenes’ were shown: how cinematographers worked with rather primitive equipment and achieved technical brilliance, and vignettes about how certain movies got to be made: the struggles and privations. Wonderful, and the B&W medium felt so real.
Nobody risks B&W anymore. The magic’s missing from Malayalam cinema.
But that’s just a personal opinion clouded by the smoke of nostalgia!
Dear Krishnan,
I am honored, and let me also ad, delightfully surprised. I literally jumped on the documentary the first time I saw it in a shop in Kottayam, during one of my ‘lightning visits’ home and was depressed to find that it was available as a VCD copy. I exhausted all my options checking with the other shops for a DVD copy before I half-heartedly bought it. I was fortunate enough to get a DVD copy from Ernakulam through a friend of mine, and here I am, ending up with two digital formats of the same 🙂 In fact I had written to Ms Vuvi Films inquiring about the availabilty of a DVD copy but I guess the letter went to Letter Heaven. 🙂 Thank you so much for your kind words and I totally agree with you on the magic part of it. In fact, I am halfway writing about the documentary here at OMC and intend to share it very soon. Those VHS tapes that you spoke about – are they still around, cos, if they are, I would love to lay my hands on them 🙂 Also there is something very interstning with the resolutions in VHS tapes and the ‘modern’ VCDs which live up to their crappinesss. The VHS Tape gives out a pic resolution of 330×480 (250 lines). The modern, ‘digital’ VCD gives us 352×240 (250 lines) !! 😀 And here we are, getting scammed over and over again. Also, if you have the time and the patience, why not start writing about those movies that you loved right here at OMC..This is an open invitation. There is no hurry.:) Regards, cinematters
looking forward to enjoy some sweet obsessions
Dear Thomas,
Not quite sure I fully understood what you really meant with that comment. If by “sweet obsessions“, you were referring to the old classics, well, you can rest assured it would be discussed here steadily, but surely. 🙂 Thanks for writing in..Cinematters
I like to watch old movies like Bharya, Manichithrathaze Enaprvukal and other good movies. Any suggestions?
Hi Gracy,
I am afraid I just couldn’t figure out whether you needed suggestions on the titles of Malayalam movies worth watching or the sources for the same. Murappennu, Ningalenne Communistaakki, Kuttyedathi, Nair pididcha Pulivaal are some of the delightful ones you could start off with. And that list is just keeps on growing 🙂 Do write in if you can with your impressions on the same. Thanks…CM

Hi Christina,
Thank you so much for passing through and your kind words. Glad that you were able to take away something from what you read through. Hope to see more of you in these parts, now that you know the way 🙂
Thanks and regards…CM
how can i watch this old movies pls repl
Hi Shaji,
Thank you for passing through and writing in. The ‘How’ of the question has at present, only painfully little to be offered as an answer. If you are in Kerala, the best way would be to keep yourself updated through the local DVD/VCD stores and buy a copy as and when they come out. Online, you could search for them at Malayalamflix.com or MaeBag.com ( the best in terms of service, by far and collections). Unfortunately most are available only as crappy VCDs so you need to live with that. I keep updating the addresses as and when I get it, here. If you have any particular titles in mind, please do write in and I will try my best helping you find out whether they are commercially available. Thanks again..Regards..CM
