There were three songs in the film, written by Bichu Thirumala and set to music by Ouseppachan.
Kannanthumbi Poramo.
The finest and one of the most memorable songs from the 1980’s has to be Kannamthumbi Poramo, ( Dragonfly, care to be friends with me?) sung by K.S. Chithra. The song has a happy version, as the theme and opening score of the movie, and the pathos version that runs through the sad, emotional spikes of the movie narrative.
Lyrics : Bichu Thirumala.
Music : Ouseppachan.
Sung by: K.S.Chitra.
Nannangaadigal.
This was more on a philosophical bent, the running theme being the desolate and bleak future of a bunch of people who wander aimlessly without a compass and a rudder to stay their course – something that beautifully reflected the life of the main characters and in effect, Appoppan Thadigal.
Lyrics : Bichu Thirumala.
Music : Ouseppachan.
Sung by: Malaysia Vasudevan, S.P.Shailaja and K.S.Chitra.
Kakkothiyammakku.
The sonically multi-layered Kakkothiyammakku is sung around the bonfire at the camp, literally bringing the Kaavu down. Janamma David, with her unique voice lends a lovely flavor to the entire composition. Lovely!
Lyrics :Bichu Thirumala.
Music : Ouseppachan.
Sung by: Malaysia Vasudevan, S.P.Shailaja and Janamma David.
Addendum : 20 February, 2011
Malaysia Vasudevan, whose vocal contributions made the above songs memorable passed away in Chennai. The singer, who has sung over 8,000 songs in Tamil and over 4,000 songs in the other south Indian languages, has also acted in several films.
